IR clouds outline global wind patterns

Humans have been aware of global weather patterns for centuries, as documented by ancient mariners. Today we use satellites to study and monitor global winds for transportation, agriculture and energy management. This lesson provides a refresher on basic wind and weather patterns with an emphasis on remote sensing. When you're done you should be able to identify and understand important atmospheric circulation features on animations of global satellite imagery.

In this lesson you will learn about:

  • ITCZ
  • Jet Streams
  • Subtropical Highs
  • Trade Winds
  • Mid-latitude westerlies

Time requirement

This lesson will take you approximately 30 minutes to complete.
