GOES-S, aka GOES-17

The GOES-S satellite launched on March 1, 2018. It was renamed GOES-17 when it reached geostationary orbit then became our nations operational GOES West satellite in May but a cooling element issue led to to partial loss of ABI imagery so GOES-18 replaced GOES-17 as the operational GOES West satellite in January 2023. Now GOES-17 serves as a backup to the operational GOES constellation.
