True-Color RGBs with GOES-16 Data

GOES-16 data posted on this page are preliminary, non-operational data and are undergoing testing

True-Color Imagery can be computed quickly in AWIPS using several simple xml files and Python code. An example is shown above. The Green Band that is missing from the ABI is simulated using a combination of the Blue Visible (0.47 µm), Red Visible (0.64 µm), and Veggie Bands (0.86 µm), and that simulated Green is then combined with the Blue and Red bands to create the imagery seen above. Some modest stretching is done to enhance contrast.

    Excellent blog, as usual. I live on the Front Range Colorado and look at the below images quite frequently and would like to see them in the RGB format as illustrated in your blog entry. With Black/white images, it’s hard to tell snow from clouds. Can I do that on my own? I’ve tried downloading a working with the AWIPS app but it’s not trival and I didn’t see any way to hook into realtime(ish) GOES 16 data. Can I entice the below entities to create RGB versions or ???

    May I ask you to provide me an equation or color table, which you use to simulate green component from mentioned three ABI bands? Is this conversion time or season dependent? Thanks.
