    (1) Introduction

This basic-level VISIT teletraining lesson will describe the polar-orbiting MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite imagery and products that have recently been added to the NWS Central, Western, Eastern, and Southern Region AWIPS servers (WFOs may obtain MODIS imagery via LDM subscription). A variety of MODIS examples will demonstrate the unique operational utility of these new satellite products, which will help forecasters prepare for new satellite channels and products coming in the GOES-R era. (lesson created October 2006; modified February 2008)

    (3) Training session options:

      (A) Interactive VISITview teletraining session. (To be used with a VISIT instructor leading the session). Click here to signup for teletraining. The session will last about 60 minutes. This teletraining session uses the Java-based VISITview software, where a computer (with 512 MB RAM or greater) with an Internet connection is needed (along with a display or projector with 1024x768 resolution or greater).

      (B) Local VISITview lesson - This is the same version of the lesson used in a "live" VISITview teletraining session, but no connection is made to an external VISITview server. You download the lesson file and page through the lesson on your own in "local mode" using the visitlocal.bat (Windows) or the visitlocal.sh (Mac OS X or Linux) file.
