Instructions for Installing the "MODIS Products in AWIPS"

VISITview Teletraining Lesson

(Updated: 12 September 2008)

In order to install this VISITview lesson, most users will want to create a new directory on a Windows computer hard drive, then download a self extracting, compressed file (an 'exe' file) into this new directory, and finally execute (run) this .exe file in order to extract the lesson data and program files.

  1. Create a new directory on your computer to hold this lesson.  For example, open a Command Prompt window and type:

  2.        cd \
           mkdir visit
           cd visit
           mkdir modis
           cd modis
  3. Download the self-extracting file (it is about 165 MB in size) by using an FTP client or by directing your Web browser to either of the following locations:

  5. Make sure you put this file into the same directory  you created in step 1.

  7. To extract all the lesson and program files, just run the modis_2008sep12.exe file by either:
  8.                                             OR
This completes the installation.  To test the lesson installation, first open the "Display" Control Panel and make sure your Settings for the Display is at least 1024 by 768 pixels or larger; then start the "local version" of the lesson by clicking on the

filename from My Computer  or Windows Explorer, or open a Command Prompt window, and type:

              cd \visit\modis

To begin the actual "live" instructor-led teletraining lesson, type visit from within the visit\modis directory. During the lesson, if a message "Communications problem - restart" appears at the bottom of the window, then you will need to close out that window (double click over the "X" icon in the upper right corner of the ViewClient window), and then enter the visitlocal command again.

In the Command Prompt window where you entered the visitlocal command, you will see various communications message appearing; for the most part, you should ignore these.

The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software is now included in the modis_2008sep12.exe file -- if you are using a Windows NT/95/98 system, it is no longer necessary to install the JRE beforehand (if you have already installed JRE on your Windows system, this will not present a conflict with the Water Vapor lesson).

If you are using a Mac OS X/Linux/Unix system, you may need to install the JRE software on your local computer...see the JRE instructions page. To begin the VISITview lesson, use the command
