About this site
The intent of this weblog is to showcase examples of some of the meteorological satellite images and products that are available to (or created by) scientists and researchers at NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), located at the University of Wisconsin - Madison’s Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) . Interesting and/or educational satellite images that are relevant to current weather events will be shown and discussed; if no significant or newsworthy weather events are happening elsewhere in the US, we will usually focus on satellite imagery over the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions.
The majority of the satellite images posted on this blog are from one of three sources:
- the SSEC Data Center, processed using McIDAS
- AWIPS workstations at CIMSS
- the SSEC MODIS Direct Broadcast and MODIS Today sites
Most of the image animations are created using the Animated GIF format or the Java applet AniS, but QuickTime is used for some of the longer (or larger file size) animations (see additional information on the Java and QuickTime animations).
If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about the CIMSS Satellite Blog, feel free to send us email.
