Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) VIIRS Environmental Data Records (EDR) Software Version 1.2.1 Release

14 February 2014

CSPP software package for transforming direct broadcast Suomi-NPP Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Science Data Records (SDRs) into Environmental Data Record (EDR) products on Intel Linux computers. Supported EDR products include,
  • VIIRS Cloud Mask (IIMCO*.h5),
  • VIIRS Active Fires (AVAFO*.h5),
  • VIIRS Aerosol Optical Thickness (VAOOO*.h5),
  • VIIRS Suspended Matter (VSUMO*.h5) and
  • VIIRS Sea Surface Temperatures (VSSTO*.h5),
with these new products,
  • VIIRS Surface Reflectance (IVISR*.h5),
  • VIIRS Enhanced Vegetation Index (VIVIO*.h5), and
  • VIIRS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (VIVIO*.h5).

The EDR software matches NOAA IDPS version Mx6.5.

What is new in CSPP VIIRS EDR 1.2.1?

  • Updated Look-Up-Tables (LUTs).
  • Improved land/sea categorization in output products; previous versions included shallow water as land.
For those who have previously installed CSPP VIIRS EDR version 1.2, the update will require a fresh install of the software, including new downloads of the EDR and CACHE tar files (but not the STATIC tar file).

CSPP VIIRS EDR 1.2.1 also contains these updates from version 1.1

  • The VIIRS EDR software can now be processed in parallel on multiple processor cores,
  • Cross granule dependency has been removed; a full suite of EDR products will be produced for each granule in a pass. Previous versions of the software yielded reduced granule output for some products because at least 5 sequential granules were required to produce 1 granule of output.

The CSPP VIIRS EDR algorithms are designed to work with either CSPP VIIRS SDR version 1.5 or SDR version 1.4 algorithms. They are *not* designed to work with earlier versions of the VIIRS SDR products (e.g., CSPP VIIRS SDR v1.3).

The CSPP software for Suomi NPP is based on the Algorithm Development Library (ADL) developed by Raytheon and the JPSS project. This means that the CSPP software is the same software that runs in the operational processing facility at NOAA/NESDIS. SSEC has packaged the software to run from the Linux command line in real-time direct broadcast mode, but we have not changed the underlying processing software, algorithms, or data formats. The output files from the CSPP SDR processing software are identical in naming, format, and structure to the corresponding files from NOAA/NESDIS. The native format for NPP SDR products is HDF5, and descriptions of the NPP file formats are available here (see the Common Data Format Control Books).
