Tour of AO&SS Building & Concert on the SquareAfter the formal conference, please join us for a tour of some of the exciting facilities located in the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences Building, home of the Space Science and Engineering Center and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies. Then stay in town Wednesday evening and join the City of Madison for a picnic dinner at the Concert on the Square. Globe/Science on a Sphere - Outreach PossibilitiesTravel around SSEC’s 3D Weather Globe to view displays of SSEC data as global animations. Select from an array of climate and weather topics to learn more about Earth observation satellites, oceans and hurricanes, and other weather events as well as the planets beyond Earth in the solar system . CAVE - CIMSS Analysis and Visualization EnvironmentWondering about tomorrow’s forecast? Stop by the CIMSS CAVE (CIMSS Analysis and Visualization Environment) for a weather briefing. The briefings are a rich opportunity to discuss local, regional and national weather topics with CIMSS scientists. The SSEC Data CenterA hub of activity at SSEC, the Data Center provides access to an array of satellite data from 10 geostationary satellites and 9 polar orbiting satellites, archiving more than 52TB of data in 2012 alone. Stop by and get a glimpse of the current state of the atmosphere almost anywhere in the world! Engineering and Satellite DevelopmentFor more than 50 years, SSEC has been at the forefront of developing engineering and satellite technology that makes it possible to see and study Earth’s atmosphere from space. Some of the earliest experiments were led by Verner E. Suomi, SSEC's founder and Robert J. Parent, of the UW-Madison College of Engineering. The Roof - A Unique Perspective of UW-MadisonUnique to Madison’s skyline, the SSEC rooftop is equipped with everything from rain gauges, to cameras that record weather as it happens, to numerous satellite dishes that receive data from environmental satellites. It also boasts one of the best views of Madison. More information to come! |
