(- Animation -)

This loop of GOES-8 Sounder IR temperature difference product uses longwave IR window Band 8 (11.0 microns) and longwave IR Band 5 (13.4 microns) to estimate the magnitude of the lake water minus 850 hPa "Delta-T" over cloud-free regions of the Great Lakes. Band 8 senses the greatest amount of upwelling radiation from near the surface, while Band 5 senses less radiation from the surface and more from the lower layers of the troposphere. Delta-T values greater than 20 degrees C are enhanced yellow to red.
