21 July 1998 -- Transverse Cirrus Bands and Turbulence Over the Northern Plains

This 2-image Java applet will take a minute or two to load...

Hold any mouse button down as you move the cursor across the large GOES-8 visible image; the smaller inset window shows the corresponding GOES-8 10.7 micron IR image. The transverse cirrus bands are very evident along the northern periphery of the Mesoscale Convective System which was moving across Minnesota and Iowa. Also evident are the overshooting cloud tops (note the subtle shadows) on the visible image in northcentral Iowa, in the vicinity of the coldest IR cloud tops (red enhancement = -70 C).
