Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) Science Data Record (SDR) Software Version 1.2 Release

4 October 2012

New SDR packages supporting the calibration and geolocation of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), and the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) instruments. The software uses input Raw Data Records (RDRs) from Direct Broadcast and transforms them into calibrated and geolocated Science Data Records (SDRs) in JPSS Common Data Format Control Book (CDFCB) HDF5 format.

Changes from CSPP SDR version 1.1 include:

  • VIIRS, ATMS, and CrIS SDR algorithms are now packaged and installed together,
  • This release replaces existing installations of CSPP SDR (it is not an update),
  • This release is based on ADL v4.0, and includes calibration lookup table updates and software changes derived as a result of Suomi NPP Calibration/Validation efforts,
  • Software to create quick look images for each instrument is now included,
  • Option to aggregate and/or compress SDR granules is now included.

The CSPP software for Suomi NPP is based on the Algorithm Development Library (ADL) developed by Raytheon and the JPSS project. This means that the CSPP software is the same software that runs in the operational processing facility at NOAA/NESDIS. SSEC has packaged the software to run from the Linux command line in real-time direct broadcast mode, but we have not changed the underlying processing software, algorithms, or data formats. The output files from the CSPP SDR processing software are identical in naming, format, and structure to the corresponding files from NOAA/NESDIS. The native format for NPP SDR products is HDF5, and descriptions of the NPP file formats are available here (see the Common Data Format Control Books).
