The GOES-R and JPSS Satellite Era

Overview

Scientists are always working to improve our ability to observe the Earth remotely. It's because of this type of continued innovation that we have the ability to understand our planet the way you have learned so far through these modules. This module will guide you through some relatively new satellite meteorology developments.

In this module, you will learn about:

1. The Suomi NPP satellite and the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) series
   • These are our newest polar-orbiting satellites, currently in orbit
2. The GOES-R Satellite Series
   • Our nations newest geostationary satellites, currently in orbit

This Satellite Meteorology Course was developed at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) located within the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) at the UW-Madison. Funding was provided by the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium (WSGC) and NOAA/NESDIS.
