Wild Weather

Beginning of Module

Created by UW-Madison, 2002

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida is responsible for naming hurricanes in the North Atlantic basin. When a weather disturbance intensifies into a tropical storm, the Hurricane Center assigns the storm a name from one of the following six lists. These lists are recycled but individual storm names are retired when a hurricane causes significant damage.

The letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z are not included because there aren't very many names beginning with those letters. This has not been a problem yet however since there aren't enough hurricanes in any given season to use names that begin with a letter from the end of the alphabet.
