You probably noticed from the table on the previous page that the number of spectral bands increases from 5 with the current GOES imager to 16 with ABI! This will help meteorologist monitor more of the electromagnetic spectrum. The 16 spectral bands for the ABI are summarized in the following table, along with the approximate spectral widths (wavelength range) and central wavelengths. The last two columns of the table provide examples of how people will use the data followed by the name of original instruments measuring the various spectral bands, called heritage instruments, many of which will not be onboard the GOES-R spacecraft when it is launched.
