1) Name the 3 main categories of clouds and the general prefix that corresponds to each category.
Low-level – no prefix 0.1 to 2 km, Mid-level “alto” 2-6km, High “cirro” 6-12 km

2) What are the two main ways that clouds are formed? Please describe.
Convection – differential heating of the atmosphere Advection – when air is transported vertically by low level winds

3) What do we call a cloud on the ground?
Fog

4) What is the prefix used for rain clouds?
“nimbo”

5) What is the main difference between high level clouds and other clouds?
Most of the moisture in high level clouds is in the form of ice crystals while low and middle level clouds are made up mostly of water vapor molecules

6) What is the meteorological name for a thunderstorm?
Cumulonimbus

7) What feature is used to identify thunderstorms on satellite images?
The overshooting top
