Ninth Annual Winds Workshop

Introduction

Wind is a key parameter for weather forecasting, meteorological studies, and climate applications. For this reason, the science and operational community have long sought ways to exploit the imagery data from geostationary satellites in order to derive Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMVs) by tracking observed cloud and moisture features. The globally derived AMV fields—an established and essential product, especially for numerical weather prediction—are complemented by other satellite-based observations of the atmospheric flow. At the biennial International Winds Workshops, the International Winds Working Group (IWWG) solicits the cooperation in the operational and research community to help improve the quality of the derived wind fields.

The 9IWWG offers an opportunity to present advances and new ideas in this specialized field. All organizations operating meteorological satellites—as well as data users and the science community—are encouraged to participate. The IWWG welcomes presentations on operational and experimental wind retrievals from satellite imagery data and their use for numerical weather prediction, nowcasting, or in climatological applications. In addition, research work on wind retrieval from active and passive microwave instruments is encouraged.

Workshop Venue and Organizers

The ninth workshop (9IWWG) will take place at the Historic Inns of Annapolis, Annapolis, Maryland (adjacent to the US Naval Academy and less than an hour's drive from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland). The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS) will host the 9IWWG, and the local organizer is Mr. Jaime Daniels of NOAA/NESDIS's Center for Satellite Applications and Research. The 9IWWG is being co- organized by NOAA/NESDIS, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). The workshop is co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), EUMETSAT, and NOAA/NESDIS.

The meeting is being organized by a joint Scientific Program Committee: Mr Chris Velden (CIMSS/Co-Chair), Dr. Kenneth Holmlund (EUMETSAT/Co-Chair), Mr. Jaime Daniels (NOAA/NESDIS), Dr. Don Hinsman (WMO), and Dr. Mary Forsythe (Met Office).

Presentations and Final Papers

All accepted abstracts will be presented orally (there will be no posters). NESDIS and EUMETSAT will act as the conference secretariat. Presentations will be available in pdf format by 1 May 2008 as part of the program on this web site ( http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/iwwg/workshop9/IWWG9Program.html). The deadline for submitting your final papers is 9 May 2008.

EUMETSAT will send the final workshop proceedings (final papers) on a CD/DVD to each workshop participant by 15 June 2008.
