During 29-31 January 1996, a deep cut-off low was positioned over the Eastern Pacific. Very intricate structure was evident around the center of the closed circulation as it moved slowly eastward. As the low approached the west coast on 31 January, an associated mid-level jet moved over central California. The 18 UT SPC Convective Outlook was updated to add a slight risk of severe convection as the left exit region of the jet approached the region, enhancing synoptic-scale lift.
