This loop of GOES-8 visible imagery shows smoke plumes from fires burning in Florida on 23 June 1998. Surface winds are plotted in red. Note how the smoke plumes from fires in northeastern Florida drift eastward early in the day, until the arrival of the afternoon sea breeze causes the smoke to drift back toward the west. The larger hazy features over the adjacent offshore waters are smoke palls from the previous days of burning.
