This loop of GOES-8 visible imagery shows smoke plumes from fires burning in Florida on 22 June 1998. Surface winds are plotted in red, with obstructions to visibility (H=haze, K=smoke) plotted in yellow. Note how the fires in northeastern Florida appear to intensify as the easterly winds from the afternoon sea breeze move through that region. The larger hazy features over the adjacent offshore waters are smoke palls from the previous days of burning.
