05 May 1998 -- Smoke From Canadian Fires

This 2-image Java applet will take a minute or two to load...

Hold any mouse button down as you move the cursor across the large GOES-8 visible image; the smaller inset window shows the corresponding GOES-8 3.9 micron shortwave IR image, which reveals the locations of black "hot spots" from fires burning in Alberta, Canada. Surface reports of smoke (K) and haze (H) are plotted on the visible image. Note how the smoke in southern Alberta and northern Montana is backed up against the higher terrain of the Rocky Mountains; in addition, some smoke is already beginning to be drawn into the cyclonic circulation of the developing low over the Alberta/Saskatchewan border.
