06 June 2002 | GOES-11 Visible Channel

Java applet developed by Tom Whittaker, CIMSS / SSEC

This animation of the GOES-11 visible channel shows the development of mesoscale vortices along the northwestern edge of the offshore fog and stratus during the early daylight hours on 06 June 2002. The onshore flow associated with an intesifying Catalina Eddy circulation was acting to slow the burnoff of fog and stratus along the immediate coastal region of southern California.

Thin plumes of elevated smoke can also be seen in this animation, drifting southwestward from a 10,000 acre wildfire which was burning in the Los Padres National Forest.
