Gravity Wave Train Over Southern Texas

This 3-hour loop of 5-15 minute GOES-10 0.65 micron visible imagery (from the GOES-10 Science and Operations Test) shows the southeastward progression of a gravity wave train along the leading edge of an advancing cold front. Surface wind barbs (blue) show that the winds change from southeasterly at 5-10 knots ahead of the front to northwesterly at 10-30 knots as the front passes through the extreme southern counties of Texas and adjacent parts of northeastern Mexico.
Several shallow gravity waves can also be seen propagating northeastward through the stratocumulus clouds over the western Gulf of Mexico.
