Community Satellite Processing Package

Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) and NOAA-20 Sensor Data Record (SDR) Software Version 3.1 Release

25 September 2018

New SDR packages supporting the calibration and geolocation of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), and the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) instruments onboard the JPSS Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 Satellites.

What is new in CSPP SDR Version 3.1:

  • The code base is updated to Block 2.1 Mx2 (ADL5.3_I2.1.02).
  • Filtering is now performed by default to remove incomplete or partial ATMS and CrIS RDR granules prior to processing. This behavior can be controlled using option -s.
  • Improved Look-Up-Table (LUT) and ancillary data download and storage.
  • Fixed bug that repeated storage of LUT and ancillary data sets into the database.
  • New ancillary and LUT distribution site is used: http://jpssdb.ssec.wisc.edu/cspp_v_3_1/ .

This release replaces existing installations of CSPP SDR (it is not an update).

System requirements for CSPP SDR Version 3.1 have not changed from the Version 3.0 releases:

  • Intel or AMD CPU with 64-bit instruction support,
  • 16 GB RAM, plus an additional 8GB of RAM for every core that is used for CSPP VIIRS SDR processing,
  • CentOS 6 64-bit Linux (or other compatible 64-bit Linux distribution,
  • 100 GB disk space (including the software and data),
  • Internet connection (for downloading ancillary data).

The CSPP SDR software package is based on the Algorithm Development Library (ADL) software developed by Raytheon for the JPSS Project. ADL allows the operational processing algorithms for Suomi-NPP to run without modification in a Linux environment. SSEC has packaged the ADL versions of the Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 algorithms so they can run from the Linux command line in real-time direct broadcast mode, but we have not changed the underlying processing software, algorithms, or data formats. The output files from the CSPP SDR processing software are identical in naming, format, and structure to the corresponding files from NOAA/NESDIS. The native format for the SDR products is HDF5, and descriptions of the S-NPP/NOAA-20 file formats are available here (see the Common Data Format Control Books).
