June 6th, 2002 | GOES West Fog/Stratus Product

This animation (Java applet) was developed by Tom Whittaker, CIMSS / SSEC

These Infrared (IR) satelllite images show the evolution of the offshore fog and stratus (yellow enhancement) during the pre-dawn hours of June 6th 2002. The fog is slow to burn off due to a circulation called a "Catalina Eddy" that keeps pushing the clouds toward the shore. Watch the animation and you can see the motion of the swirls.

You can also see symbols on the map showing that weather observers were reporting fog that morning. These are the sets of three 3 cyan-colored horizontal lines that are plotted on the images.

A region of hot spots (black to red enhanced pixels) was associated with a 10,000 acre wildfire which was burning in the Los Padres National Forest.
