SSEC/CIMSS/Locally Stationed NOAA Representation at EUMETSAT Satellite Conference 2026
UW-Madison research scientists from the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC)/Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) participated in the 2026 EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference (EUMETSAT 40th Anniversary), which included oral/poster presentations and conference session chairing duties. The conference was held 21-25 September 2026 in Darmstadt, Germany. Sessions included New Frontiers of Earth Observations, Satellite Nowcasting/Decision Support/Prediction, AI/ML “Toolbox” Research Exploration, and Extreme Weather Events, among others. One of the conference highlights was the new geostationary Meteosat Third Generation InfraRed Sounder (MTG-IRS) arriving on orbit and the exciting science challenges to come. MTG-IRS will provide real-time operational geostationary hyperspectral infrared data for planning and testing future GeoXO GXS algorithms and capabilities. Side meetings occurred with EUMETSAT colleagues discussing collaborative cross cutting meteorological satellite training, calibration/validation, application science endeavors between SSEC/CIMSS and EU/International scientists.
