Monitoring the Global Environment

Beginning of Module

Assessment

Created by UW-Madison, 2002
GOES and POES satellites of the 21st century are teaming up to provide two-tiered long-term measurements of the Earth at specific temporal, spectral and spatial intervals. The benefits from this information ranges from detailed observations of weather patterns and natural disasters to long-term monitoring of natural and human-induced effects on global climate change.

There are several satellite missions not covered in this module that help monitor our global environment, and more are planned for the upcoming decades. Cumulatively, satellites collecting data continuously from multiple vantage points are providing the information that world citizens need to be better stewards of the planet we live on.
