{"id":9985,"date":"2012-03-15T21:53:09","date_gmt":"2012-03-15T21:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=9985"},"modified":"2012-03-16T22:35:17","modified_gmt":"2012-03-16T22:35:17","slug":"undular-bore-along-the-leading-edge-of-a-pneumonia-front-over-lake-michigan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/9985","title":{"rendered":"Undular bore along the leading edge of a &#8220;pneumonia front&#8221; over Lake Michigan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120315_modis_truecolor_pneumonia_front_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120315_modis_truecolor_pneumonia_front_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>250-meter resolution Terra and Aqua MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the <a title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&amp;product=true_color&amp;date=2012_03_15_075&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed the presence of an undular bore along the leading edge of a southward-moving cold front <em>(also known regionally as a &#8220;<a title=\"pneumonia front\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/663\"><strong>pneumonia front<\/strong><\/a>&#8220;)<\/em> on <a title=\"15 March 2012 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20120315.html\"><strong>15 March 2012<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of the MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that SST values in the central portion of Lake Michigan (behind the cold frontal boundary) were generally in the upper 30s to low 40s F <em>(darker blue color enhancement)<\/em>. At Racine in southeastern Wisconsin <em>(station identifier KRAC),<\/em> the surface air temperature dropped from 69 F to 47 F in 2 hours after the front passed. Just to the north, the high temperature of 72 F at Milwaukee <em>(station identifier KMKE)<\/em> set a record high for the date &#8212; then the temperature there dropped into the upper 40s F a few hours later.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120315_modis_sst_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product + Surface frontal analysis\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120315_modis_sst_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product + Surface frontal analysis\" width=\"480\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product + Surface frontal analysis<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the previous night-time hours, the southerly to southwesterly flow of unseasonably warm air <em>(with dew points in the 50s F)<\/em> over the cold waters led to widespread lake fog across almost all of Lake Michigan, as was seen in a 03:22 UTC MODIS fog\/stratus product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/MODIS_FOG_20120315_0322.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS fog\/stratus product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/MODIS_FOG_20120315_0322.png\" alt=\"MODIS fog\/stratus product\" width=\"480\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS fog\/stratus product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A few hours later (at 07:33 UTC),\u00c2\u00a0 isolated convective rain showers were moving across the southern half of Lake Michigan &#8212; these showed up at the darker gray to black enhanced features on the MODIS fog\/stratus product image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. The corresponding MODIS Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and Low Instrument Flight Rules (LIFR) Probability products indicated a number of areas with IFR and\/or LIFR probabilities in excess of 80-90% <em>(darker red color enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120315_mofis_fog_ifr_lifr_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"MODIS fog\/stratus product + IFR Probability product + LIFR Probability product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120315_mofis_fog_ifr_lifr_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS fog\/stratus product + IFR Probability product + LIFR Probability product\" width=\"480\" height=\"453\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS fog\/stratus product + IFR Probability product + LIFR Probability product<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>250-meter resolution Terra and Aqua MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the SSEC MODIS Today site (above) revealed the presence of an undular bore along the leading edge of a southward-moving cold front (also known regionally as a &#8220;pneumonia front&#8220;) on 15 March 2012.
