Lihue on Kauai set a new daily record rainfall amount with <strong>8.64 inches<\/strong> falling on 05 March.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the largest thunderstorm complexes was approaching the island of Kauai from the southwest around 03 UTC on 06 March <em>(5 pm local time on 05 March),<\/em> a comparison of a 1-km resolution NOAA-15 AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image to the corresponding 4-km resolution GOES-15 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> demonstrated the advantage of higher spatial resolution for identifying the location of colder cloud top IR brightness temperatures associated with convective overshooting tops. Southwest of Kauai the coldest IR temperature on the AVHRR image was -70\u00c2\u00ba C, compared to -62\u00c2\u00ba C on the GOES-15 image.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120306_avhrr_g15_ir_HI_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"NOAA-15 AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image + GOES-15 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120306_avhrr_g15_ir_HI_anim.gif\" title=\"NOAA-15 AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image + GOES-15 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NOAA-15 AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image + GOES-15 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AWIPS images of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mimic-tpw\/global2\/main.html\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water product\">MIMIC Total Precipitable Water<\/a><\/strong> product with overlays of surface analyses <strong><em>(below; <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120305-06_mimic_tpw_HI_anim.gif\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water product (longer animation)\">longer animation<\/a>)<\/em><\/strong> showed that deep moisture was pooling along a stationary frontal boundary \/ wind shear axis that was situated between the islands of Kauai and Oahu. <em>(Note to NWS forecast offices: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes_r\/proving-ground\/awips\/mimic\/index.html\" title=\"MIMIC TPW in AWIPS\">MIMIC TPW is available in AWIPS<\/a><\/strong>, via LDM subscription)<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120306_mimic_tpw_surface_analysis_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water product + Surface analyses\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120306_mimic_tpw_surface_analysis_anim.gif\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water product + Surface analyses\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MIMIC Total Precipitable Water product + Surface analyses<\/p><\/div>\n<p>GOES-15 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images with water vapor Atmospheric Motion Vector (AMV) winds from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/windmain.php?&#038;basin=eastpac&#038;sat=wg9&#038;prod=wvir&#038;zoom=&#038;time\" title=\"CIMSS Tropical Cyclones site (winds products)\">CIMSS Tropical Cyclones<\/a><\/strong> site  <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> showed that a well-defined trough of low pressure was located to the northwest of the Hawaiian Islands during the 05 March &#8211; 06 March period.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120305-06_wv_upper_level_winds_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GOES-15 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images + water vapor atmospheric motion vector winds\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120305-06_wv_upper_level_winds_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-15 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images + water vapor atmospheric motion vector winds\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images + water vapor atmospheric motion vector winds<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Upper-tropospheric divergence derived from these satellite AMVs <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> revealed a trend of increasing divergence aloft over the northern Hawaiian Islands as the trough approached.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120305-06_wv_upper_level_divergence_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GOES-15 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images + satellite wind derived upper-level divergence\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120305-06_wv_upper_level_divergence_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-15 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images + satellite wind derived upper-level divergence\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images + satellite wind derived upper-level divergence<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Juxtaposed beneath the strong upper-tropospheric divergence was strong lower-tropospheric convergence in the vicinity of the stationary front \/ wind shear axis, as seen in GOES-15 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images with contours of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/03\/120305-06_ir_lower_level_winds_anim.gif\" title=\"IR satellite winds (lower-tropospheric winds)\">IR satellite wind<\/a><\/strong> derived 850-925 hPa convergence <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong>.
