The air behind each of these pulses appeared to be quite dry, judging from the general lack of cloudiness in their wake.<\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of the GOES sounder 7.4 and 7.0 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channels, the GOES sounder Total Precipitable Water product, and the GOES imager water vapor channel at 16 UTC\u00c2\u00a0 <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that a tongue of dry air existed over the Bahamas, sandwiched in between Hanna and the clouds\/moisture over Florida. The <a title=\"Nassau, Bahamas rawinsonde report\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/MYNN_20080903_1200.png\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>rawinsonde report from Nassau in the Bahamas<\/strong><\/a> showed that the air mass was indeed quite dry within the 700-500 hPa layer.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/US_Sndr_WV_7.4u_Sat_20080903_1601.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"AWIPS images of GOES sounder WV and TPW, with GOES imager WV channel\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/US_Sndr_WV_7.4u_Sat_20080903_1601.png\" alt=\"AWIPS images of GOES sounder WV and PW, with GOES imager WV\" width=\"480\" height=\"451\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">AWIPS images of GOES sounder WV and TPW, with GOES imager WV channel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (TPW) product\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic\/real-time\/tpw2\/natl\/main.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MIMIC Total Precipitable Water<\/strong><\/a> (TPW) product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> suggested that a large pocket of dry air <em>(TPW values around 35 mm, cyan colors)<\/em> was situated east of Hanna on 01 September, with part of this dry air then moving westward around the northern periphery of  the tropical storm on 02-03 September.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080901-03_mimic_tpw_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (TPW) product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080901-03_mimic_tpw_anim.gif\" alt=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (TPW) product\" width=\"481\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (TPW) product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a title=\"Saharan Air Layer (SAL) product\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic2\/real-time\/salmain.php?&amp;prod=splitEW&amp;time\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Saharan Air Layer (SAL)<\/strong><\/a> product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> displayed a weak SAL signal <em>(yellow to red colors)<\/em> over the Bahamas region, supporting the idea that the pocket of dry SAL air had indeed moved around to the northwestern quadrant of Hanna. In addition, <a title=\"MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080903_modis_aod.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth<\/strong><\/a> values were slightly elevated over that region, suggesting the presence of African dust. Some of this dry mid-tropospheric SAL air may have been mixed downward behind the westward-propagating outflow boundaries noted on the GOES-13 visible imagery above.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080903_12z_sal.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Saharan Air Layer (SAL) product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/09\/080903_12z_sal.gif\" alt=\"Saharan Air Layer (SAL) product\" width=\"481\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saharan Air Layer (SAL) product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Farther to the east, an even more pronounced &#8220;outflow boundary&#8221; was seen moving westward away from Tropical Storm Josephine, as shown on GOES-12 visible imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
