The characeristic &#8220;wrapping spiral&#8221; of dry air <em>(yellow to orange color enhancement)<\/em> around the storm center signals that the mature cyclone is entering the occluded stage of its life cycle. Great detail in the water vapor structure can be seen in the 4-km resolution GOES-15 water vapor imagery that would not have been evident in the previous 8-km resolution GOES-11 water vapor imagery (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/9307\" title=\"GOES-11 to GOES-15 transition\">recent GOES-11 to GOES-15 transition<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of 1-km resolution MODIS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel data <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed the occluded cyclone at 21:29 UTC.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/12\/111221_modis_vis_ir_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel + MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/12\/111221_modis_vis_ir_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel + MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel + MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AWIPS images of GOES-15 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel dta with overlays of fixed buoy data and the North Pacific surface analysis <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed that the intensity <em>(minimum central pressure)<\/em> of the storm was underestimated on the 12:00 UTC surface analysis &#8212; but after passing over a buoy which registered a pressure value of 976.4 hPa at 15:00 UTC, the storm&#8217;s intensity was appropriately adjusted on the subsequent 18:00 UTC surface analysis.
