{"id":888,"date":"2008-08-28T23:29:30","date_gmt":"2008-08-28T23:29:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=888"},"modified":"2008-08-29T21:35:29","modified_gmt":"2008-08-29T21:35:29","slug":"smoke-in-the-foothills-of-colorado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/888","title":{"rendered":"Smoke over the Foothills of Colorado"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080828_g11_g13_vis_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-11 + GOES-13 visible images (Animated GIF)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080828_g11_g13_vis_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-11 + GOES-13 visible images (Animated GIF)\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-11 + GOES-13 visible images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of GOES-11 and GOES-13 visible images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed that some smoke aloft <em>(from wildfires that had been burning in parts of the northern Rocky Mountains)<\/em> was drifting over the Foothills region of eastern Colorado during the morning hours on <a title=\"28 August 2008 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20080828.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>28 August 2008<\/strong><\/a>. Northwesterly winds aloft were\u00c2\u00a0 blowing a good deal of the smoke toward the southeast, but some smoke at lower levels could be seen moving southwestward and backing up against the higher terrain <em>(a result of\u00c2\u00a0 upslope winds in the wake of a cold frontal passage\u00c2\u00a0 on the previous day)<\/em>. Both the <a title=\"Denver CO rawinsonde report\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/KDNR_20080828_1800.png\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Denver, Colorado rawinsonde report<\/strong><\/a> and the <a title=\"Platteville CO wind profiler data\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/PLTC2_20080828_2300.png\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Platteville, Colorado NOAA wind profiler data<\/strong><\/a> indicated the northeasterly upslope flow was restricted to the lowest 1 km or so of the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>A similar comparison of GOES-12 and GOES-13 images during the afternoon hours <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that\u00c2\u00a0 the low-level smoke was still backed up against the Foothills, but was also beginning to slowly drift toward the north as the boundary layer winds began to acquire more of a southerly component. Note that the surface features on the GOES-13 animations exhibit less image-to-image movement compared to both GOES-11 and GOES-12 &#8212; improvements to the GOES-13 spacecraft Image Navigation and Registration (INR) system\u00c2\u00a0 include the use of star trackers to provide more precise image navigation.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080828_g12_g13_vis_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-12 + GOES-13 visible images (Animated GIF)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080828_g12_g13_vis_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-12 + GOES-13 visible images\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/> data<br \/>\n<\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 + GOES-13 visible images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The smoke was easier to identify using 250-m resolution MODIS true color imagery from the <a title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&amp;product=true_color&amp;date=2008_08_28_241&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true&amp;sector=USA2&amp;resolution=1000m\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong>,<\/em> and this smoke was also evident on the MODIS <a title=\"MODIS aerosol optical depth product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080828_modis_aod.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Aerosol Optical Depth<\/strong><\/a> product.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080828_modis_truecolor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080828_modis_truecolor.jpg\" alt=\"MODIS true color image\" width=\"480\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Denver National Weather Service forecast discussion mentioned the smoke:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION<br \/>\nNATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DENVER CO<br \/>\n315 PM MDT THU AUG 28 2008<\/p>\n<p>.AVIATION&#8230;VFR CONDITIONS TO CONTINUE THROUGH TONIGHT. SMOKE OVER AREA HAS BEEN CREATING SOME SLANT VISIBILITY PROBLEMS UPON APPROACH AS WELL AS TAKE OFFS&#8230;BUT NO CONCERNS WITH SURFACE VISIBILITY. IT DOESN`T APPEAR THAT SURFACE VISIBILITY WILL BE REDUCED.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While there were a couple of pilot reports of haze aloft over the region around 18:00 UTC, at altitudes of 11,500\u00c2\u00a0 and 14,000 feet <em><strong>(below),<\/strong><\/em> the surface visibilities only dropped to <strong>6 miles<\/strong> at Boulder (KBJC) and <strong>7 miles<\/strong> at Denver (KDEN)\u00c2\u00a0 during the afternoon hours, and remained around <strong>10 miles<\/strong> at other surrounding airports.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080828_modis_vis_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"AWIPS images of the MODIS visible channel (Animated GIF)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080828_modis_vis_anim.gif\" alt=\"AWIPS images of the MODIS visible channel\" width=\"480\" height=\"458\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">AWIPS images of the MODIS visible channel<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A comparison of GOES-11 and GOES-13 visible images (above) showed that some smoke aloft (from wildfires that had been burning in parts of the northern Rocky Mountains) was drifting over the Foothills region of eastern Colorado during the morning hours on 28 August 2008.
