GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\">CIMSS Tropical Cyclones<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> showed the development of deep organized convection both east and west of the storm center.<\/p>\n<p>A DMSP SSMIS 85 GHz microwave image <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> revealed a closed eyewall had formed (although the southern portion of the eyewall was thin and poorly-defined).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~scottb\/110831_2257_katia_mw.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"DMSP SSMIS 85 GHz microwave image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~scottb\/110831_2257_katia_mw.gif\" title=\"DMSP SSMIS 85 GHz microwave image\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">DMSP SSMIS 85 GHz microwave image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Katia existed in an environment of relatively low 850-200 hPa deep layer wind shear <strong><em>(below),<\/em><\/strong> which was one factor that favored further intensification.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~scottb\/110901_katia_ir_shear.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GOES-13 IR image + Deep layer wind shear product\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~scottb\/110901_katia_ir_shear.gif\" title=\"GOES-13 IR image + Deep layer wind shear product\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 IR image + Deep layer wind shear product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An AWIPS image of EUMETSAT MetOp ASCAT scatterometer surface winds <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> indicated that the radius of tropical storm force winds had increased since earlier in the day as Katia intensified.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~scottb\/Scat_Winds_-_10m_20110831_2350.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ASCAT scatterometer surface winds\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~scottb\/Scat_Winds_-_10m_20110831_2350.png\" title=\"ASCAT scatterometer surface winds\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">ASCAT scatterometer surface winds<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm 12L intensified on the evening of 31 August to become Hurricane Katia, the second Atlantic basin hurricane of the 2011 season.
