Increased frequency of images over area of interest (see Details)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*User Actions*:  None.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*Details\/Specifics of Change*: GOES-R Proving Grounds Testing Over Tropical Storm Don in the Gulf of Mexico at 27 North and 96 West<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*Requestor: *CIRA<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>McIDAS images of GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel data <strong><em>(above; click image to play animation; also available as a <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/07\/110729_g13_vis_don_srso.mov\">QuickTime movie<\/a>)<\/em><\/strong> showed a number of convective bursts associated with the tropical storm &#8212; note that there were several periods where images were available at <em>1-minute intervals<\/em> while GOES-13 was in SRSO mode. The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/abi\/\">ABI instrument<\/a><\/strong> on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/\">GOES-R<\/a><\/strong> will actually be able to provide images as frequently as <em>every 30 seconds<\/em> over special regions of interest (such as tropical cyclones or severe thunderstorms).<\/p>\n<p>A sequence of three AWIPS images of 1-km resolution MODIS and POES AVHRR IR data <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> displayed  intricate cloud top structures and very cold cloud top IR brightness temperatures  &#8212; as cold as <strong>-90\u00c2\u00baC<\/strong> <em>(darker violet color enhancement)<\/em> on the  14:23 UTC MODIS image and the 20:21 UTC POES AVHRR image.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/07\/110729_modis_poes_ir_don_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m and POES AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/07\/110729_modis_poes_ir_don_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m and POES AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m and POES AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For the three individual 1-km resolution MODIS and POES AVHRR IR images above, comparisons with the corresponding 4-km resolution GOES-13 IR images are shown below. There are slight time differences between the MODIS\/AVHRR IR and the GOES-13 IR images &#8212; but the majority of the northwestward shift in the location of features on the GOES images is due to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/217\">parallax<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the spatial resolution of the IR channels on the ABI instrument on GOES-R will be 2-km, these 1-km resolution comparisons still serve to demonstrate that improved spatial resolution should allow better detection of such detailed cloud top structures and cold cloud top IR brightness temperatures associated with tropical cyclones.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a
