Over Ontario, most of the smoke was located aloft (see the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/alg.umbc.edu\/usaq\/archives\/004247.html\">US Air Quality Smog Blog<\/a><\/strong> for more details), but surface visibilities were still being restricted to 2-5 miles at some locations. Farther away from the source region, the leading edge of the smoke moving over portions of New England and the Canadian Maritime Provinces exhibited significantly less optical thickness.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/07\/110718_g13_vis_large_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/07\/110718_g13_vis_large_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The hazy extent of the smoke plume could be more readily seen on a MODIS &#8220;true color&#8221; Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/eosweb.ssec.wisc.edu\/cgi-bin\/eosdb.cgi\">SSEC MODIS Direct Broadcast<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong>.
