However, it is interesting to note the motion of the ice on the high-speed animation &#8212; some of the ice features move in one direction, stop, and then move in a nearly opposite direction during the course of the day. A ridge of high pressure was in place across the region, with surface winds generally from the northeast over the eastern portion of Hudson Bay, and surface winds from the southwest over the western portion of Hudson Bay (<a title=\"ASCAT scatterometer surface winds\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/06\/Scat_Winds_-_10m_20110629_1758.png\"><strong>ASCAT winds<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of AWIPS images of the MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and a false color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image <em>(created using MODIS bands 01\/07\/07 as the R\/G\/B components of the image)<\/em> confirmed that it was ice occupying the majority of Hudson Bay &#8212; ice features (as well as glaciated clouds) appear as shades of red on the false color image. According to an analysis performed by the <a title=\"Canadian Ice Service\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ec.gc.ca\/glaces-ice\/default.asp?lang=En&amp;n=D32C361E-1\"><strong>Canadian Ice Service<\/strong><\/a>, this consisted of <a title=\"Hudson Bay ice analysis\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/06\/110627_hudson_bay_ice_analysis.gif\"><strong>thick to medium first year ice<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/06\/110629_modis_vis_rgb_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image + MODIS false color RGB image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/06\/110629_modis_vis_rgb_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image + MODIS false color RGB image\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image + MODIS false color RGB image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Toward the end of the GOES-13 visible channel animation above, the hazy signature of smoke aloft could be seen drifting south-southwestward over the far eastern part of Hudson Bay. This smoke &#8212; a result of wildfires burning in northern and western Canada &#8212; also showed up well in a MODIS true color RGB image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> from the <a title=\"SSEC Direct Broadcast site\" href=\"http:\/\/eosweb.ssec.wisc.edu\/cgi-bin\/eosdb.cgi\"><strong>SSEC Direct Broadcast<\/strong><\/a> site.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/06\/2011-06-29_1722-1734_HBAY_010403_1KM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS true color RGB image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/06\/2011-06-29_1722-1734_HBAY_010403_1KM.jpg\" alt=\"MODIS true color RGB image\" width=\"481\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color RGB image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An AWIPS image of the MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed that SST values were still in the 30s F <em>(darker blue color enhancement)<\/em> across much of Hudson Bay, with a few pockets of warmer water seen in various locations.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/06\/MODIS_SST_20110629_1722.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/06\/MODIS_SST_20110629_1722.png\" alt=\"MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CIMSS participation in <a title=\"GOES-R Proving Ground\" href=\"..\/..\/..\/goes_r\/proving-ground.html\"><strong>GOES-R Proving Ground<\/strong><\/a> activities includes making a variety of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~jordang\/awips-modis\/index.html\">MODIS<\/a><\/strong><strong><\/strong> images and products available for National Weather Service offices to  add to their local AWIPS workstations.
