As noted by the National Hurricane Center&#8217;s Gustav discussion number 6:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>HURRICANE GUSTAV DISCUSSION NUMBER\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 6<br \/>\nNWS TPC\/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 AL072008<br \/>\n1100 AM EDT TUE AUG 26 2008<\/p>\n<p>AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE MISSION EARLY THIS MORNING FOUND PEAK FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS OF 91 KT&#8230;AND AN SFMR SURFACE WIND OF 78 KT. THESE MEASUREMENTS SUPPORT AN INITIAL INTENSITY OF 80 KT.\u00c2\u00a0 A DROPSONDE RELEASED IN THE EYE OF GUSTAV DURING THE LAST AIRCRAFT PASS THROUGH THE CENTER JUST BEFORE 1200 UTC&#8230;FOUND A SURFACE PRESSURE OF 982 MB&#8230;BUT WITH 12 KT OF WIND AT THE SURFACE&#8230;SO THE MINIMUM PRESSURE HAS BEEN ESTIMATED SLIGHTLY LOWER.\u00c2\u00a0 THE AIRCRAFT AND EARLIER <em><strong>MICROWAVE SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATE THE PRESENCE OF A<\/strong><strong> VERY SMALL EYE&#8230;HOWEVER THE EYE HAS NOT YET BECOME APPARENT IN<\/strong><strong> CONVENTIONAL SATELLITE IMAGERY<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A comparison of\u00c2\u00a0 imagery from the <a title=\"CIMSS Tropical Cyclones site\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic2\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>CIMSS Tropical Cyclones<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> shows the shield of central dense overcast (cold cloud tops) on the GOES-12 IR image, with evidence of an eye structure showing up on the SSM\/IS microwave image. 1-km resolution GOES-12 visible imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> also did not display an eye with Hurricane Gustav during the morning hours.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080826_gustav_vis_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-12 visible images (Animated GIF)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080826_gustav_vis_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-12 visible images (Animated GIF)\" width=\"479\" height=\"359\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 visible images (Animated GIF)<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Gustav rapidly intensified into a hurricane on 26 August 2008 (less than 24 hours after the first advisory was issued).
