AWIPS images of the MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m and GOES 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR channels <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed a significantly warmer &#8220;fire hot spot&#8221; on the MODIS 18:20 UTC image <em>(51.0\u00c2\u00ba C, orange pixels)<\/em> compared to the 18:25 GOES image <em>(36.5\u00c2\u00ba C, dark black pixels)<\/em>. The fire hot spot on GOES imagery did not approach the temperatures seen on the MODIS image until about <strong><a title=\"20:15 UTC GOES IR image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/US_3.9u_Sat_20080822_2015.png\" target=\"_blank\">20:15 UTC<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This wildfire could be viewed using GOES-11 (GOES-West), GOES-12 (GOES-East), and GOES-13 <em>(undergoing a period of operational testing as &#8220;GOES-Central&#8221;)<\/em> &#8212; you can see that there was a slight amount of image &#8220;wobble&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 on the GOES-11 and GOES-12 shortwave IR and visible images, while the corresponding GOES-13 image navigation was very steady <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. Changes to the GOES-13 spacecraft have resulted in improved image navigation compared to the previous GOES satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Also note that the smoke plume on the visible images was much more apparent on the GOES-12 and GOES-13 images &#8212; this is due to the fact that the forward scattering angle was more favorable from the viewing perspectives of GOES-12 <em>(positioned at 35\u00c2\u00ba W longitude)<\/em> and GOES-13 <em>(positioned at 105\u00c2\u00ba W longitude)<\/em> during the late afternoon hours, which helped to highlight the smoke plume as it drifted southeastward.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080822_g11_g12_g13_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-11 + GOES-12 + GOES-13 shortwave IR and visible images (Animated GIF)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080822_g11_g12_g13_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-11 + GOES-12 + GOES-13 shortwave IR and visible images (Animated GIF)\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-11 + GOES-12 + GOES-13 shortwave IR and visible images (Animated GIF)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A plot of the GOES-11, GOES-12, and GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR brightness temperature values <em><strong>(below) <\/strong><\/em>showed a fair amount of variability between the maximum &#8220;fire hot spot&#8221; temperatures sensed by the different satellites.
