This fire originally began on 28 April as a result of a cloud-to-ground lightning strike.<\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR data <strong><em>(below; click image to play animation)<\/em><\/strong> displayed the rapid growth in size of the associated fire &#8220;hot spot&#8221; <em>(black to red to yellow color enhancement)<\/em>.  The hot spot first became apparent around 17:31 UTC <em>(1:31 pm local time),<\/em> and quickly grew as drier air moved across the region in the wake of a passing cold frontal boundary.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/05\/110506-07_g13_swir_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images (click image to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/05\/US_3.9u_Sat_20110506_2345.png\" alt=\"GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images (click image to play animation)\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR images (click image to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of AWIPS images of 1-km resolution POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m and 4-km resolution GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR data <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> demonstrated the advantage of better spatial resolution for locating the fire boundaries. CIMSS participation in <a title=\"GOES-R Proving Ground\" href=\"..\/..\/..\/goes_r\/proving-ground.html\"><strong>GOES-R Proving Ground<\/strong><\/a> activities includes making a variety of  <a title=\"AVHRR imagery in AWIPS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~jordang\/awips-avhrr\/index.html\"><strong>POES AVHRR<\/strong><\/a> images and products available for National Weather Service offices to add to their local AWIPS workstations. A &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/poes_and_avhrr_satellite_products_in_awips\/\">POES and AVHRR Satellite Products in AWIPS<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; VISIT training lesson is also available to help users understand the products and their applications to weather analysis and forecasting.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/05\/110506_2357_avhrr_g13_swir_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR image comparison\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/05\/110506_2357_avhrr_g13_swir_anim.gif\" alt=\"POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR image comparison\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">POES AVHRR 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m + GOES-13 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR image comparison<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>===== 07 MAY UPDATE =====<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the following day, a comparison of 250-meter resolution MODIS <a title=\"true color and false color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images\" href=\"http:\/\/rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov\/faq\/#faq04\"><strong>true color and false color<\/strong><\/a> Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the <a title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&amp;product=true_color&amp;date=2011_05_07_127&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed the dense smoke plume <em>(which appeared as varying shades of\u00c2\u00a0 gray on the true color image),<\/em> as well as the large size of the burn scar <em>(which appeared as darker shades of darker red to brown on the false color image)<\/em> resulting from this fire that had been burning for several days. Also evident was the fact that several active, very hot fires were burning at this time along the edges of the burn scar &#8212; these hot fires appeared as the brighter pink areas on the false color image.
