{"id":7763,"date":"2011-03-31T22:49:25","date_gmt":"2011-03-31T22:49:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=7763"},"modified":"2011-04-01T23:35:22","modified_gmt":"2011-04-01T23:35:22","slug":"wisconsin-8-consecutive-days-with-the-coldest-overnight-low-temperatures-in-the-lower-48-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/7763","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin: 8 consecutive days with the coldest overnight low temperatures in the Lower 48 states"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/03\/110324-30_modis_truecolor_wi_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"MODIS true color RGB images from 24, 27, 28, 29, and 30 March 2011\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/03\/110324-30_modis_truecolor_wi_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS true color RGB images from 24, 27, 28, 29, and 30 March 2011\" width=\"480\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color RGB images from 24, 27, 28, 29, and 30 March 2011<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A series of MODIS <a title=\"true color RGB images\" href=\"http:\/\/rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov\/faq\/#faq04\"><strong>true color<\/strong><\/a> Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from <a title=\"24 March 2011 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20110324.html\"><strong>24 March<\/strong><\/a>, <a title=\"27 March 2011 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20110327.html\"><strong>27 March<\/strong><\/a>, <a title=\"28 March 2011 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20110328.html\"><strong>28 March<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a title=\"29 March 2011 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20110329.html\">29 March<\/a><\/strong>, and <a title=\"30 March 2011 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20110330.html\"><strong>30 March<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed that most of the northern 2\/3 of Wisconsin had significant snow  cover during this period (much of it due to the <a title=\"late winter storm of 22-23 March 2011 (Green Bay NWS)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/grb\/?n=032311_snowstorm\"><strong>late winter storm of 22-23 March<\/strong><\/a>) &#8212; the\u00c2\u00a0 maximum snow depths across the state ranged from <strong>24 inches<\/strong> on 24 March to <strong>18 inches<\/strong> on 30 March.\u00c2\u00a0 Also note that there were also a few small brown-colored areas in far northwestern Wisconsin with no snow on the ground at this time.<\/p>\n<p>This combination of deep snow late-season cover along with cloud-free skies due to persistent high pressure over the region allowed northern Wisconsin to record the <a title=\"US temperature extremems (compiled by USA Today)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/weather\/news\/extremes\/march-2011-temperature-extremes.htm\"><strong>coldest overnight low temperatures in Lower 48 states<\/strong><\/a> for 8 consecutive days at the end of March 2011:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24 March: -8\u00c2\u00baF at Hayward<\/li>\n<li>25 March: -12\u00c2\u00baF at Tomahawk<\/li>\n<li>26 March: -13\u00c2\u00baF at Tomahawk<\/li>\n<li>27 March: -12\u00c2\u00baF at Tomahawk<\/li>\n<li>28 March: -13\u00c2\u00ba F at Tomahawk<\/li>\n<li>29 March: -7\u00c2\u00baF at Tomahawk<\/li>\n<li>30 March: +1\u00c2\u00baF at Tomahawk<\/li>\n<li>31 March: +7\u00c2\u00baF at Antigo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A comparison of AWIPS images of the <a title=\"MODIS in AWIPS site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~jordang\/awips-modis\/index.html\"><strong>MODIS<\/strong><\/a> 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and the corresponding MODIS Land Surface temperature (LST) product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the effect that the deep snow cover was having across Wisconsin and Lower Michigan on 29 March.
