The 500 hPa wind fields from the RUC80 model indicated that winds turned more northerly and increased in speed behind the trough axis.<\/p>\n<p>At 20:01 UTC, a comparison of the GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image with the corresponding 1-km resolution <strong><a title=\"MODIS in AWIPS: VISIT training lesson\" href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/modis_products_in_awips\/\">MODIS<\/a><\/strong> 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> demonstrated the value of higher spatial resolution for detecting the presence of widespread mesoscale mountain waves that covered a good deal of the state of Utah. Such a mountain wave signature on water vapor imagery can indicate the presence of a potential for turbulence &#8212; however, in this case there were no pilot reports of turbulence that showed up over Utah during that particular time period.<\/p>\n<p>There was also an obvious northwestward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/217\">parallax shift<\/a><\/strong> in the image features on the GOES-13 image, due to the large viewing angle from that geostationary satellite <em>(which was positioned over the Equator at 75 degrees West longitude)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/01\/110119_modis_goes_wv_ut_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image + MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/01\/110119_modis_goes_wv_ut_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image + MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image + MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AWIPS images of GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8216;water vapor channel&#8221; data (above) showed a large area of dry air aloft moving southward across the state of Utah behind a shortwave trough axis on 19 January 2011.
