This was part of a large <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/101231_rpts.html\">severe weather outbreak<\/a><\/strong> across much of the south-central US.<\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of 4-km resolution GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR data <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> showed the cold cloud top IR brightness temperatures associated with the storm, which reached a minimum value of -77\u00c2\u00ba C at 22:10 UTC.<\/p>\n<p>About 1.5 hours before the Jackson MS tornado, AWIPS images of 1-km resolution <strong><a title=\"POES\/AVHRR in AWIPS: VISIT training lesson\" href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/poes_and_avhrr_satellite_products_in_awips\/\">POES AVHRR<\/a><\/strong> 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible and 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR data <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> displayed IR cloud top brightness temperatures as cold as <strong>-82\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong> <em>(violet color enhancement),<\/em> as well as a prominent shadow that was being cast by that particular overshooting top on the visible image.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/12\/101231_avhrr_vis_ir_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"POES AVHRR 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible + 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/12\/101231_avhrr_vis_ir_anim.gif\" alt=\"POES AVHRR 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible + 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">POES AVHRR 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible + 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of the 1-km resolution POES AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image with the corresponding 4-km resolution GOES-13 IR image <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> is a good demonstration of the problem of parallax error associated with viewing tall storm top features from geostationary satellites.
