AWIPS images of 4-km resolution GOES-3 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;water vapor channel&#8221; data <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> showed the evolution of several important storm features, including a well defined dry slot, deformation zone, and Trough of Warm Air Aloft (TROWAL). The highest snowfall totals with this storm included <strong>26.0 inches<\/strong> at Winona Dam, Minnesota and <strong>23.0 inches<\/strong> at Osceola, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>A closer view using AWIPS images of 1-km resolution <strong><a title=\"MODIS in AWIPS: VISIT training lesson\" href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/modis_products_in_awips\/\">MODIS<\/a><\/strong> 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR and <strong><a title=\"POES\/AVHRR in AWIPS: VISIT training lesson\" href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/poes_and_avhrr_satellite_products_in_awips\/\">POES AVHRR<\/a><\/strong> 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR data <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> revealed the presence of widespread convective elements are various points in the storm&#8217;s life, with many exhibiting cloud top IR brightness temperatures as cold as <strong>-65\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong> <em>(darker red color enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/12\/101211-12_modis_avhrr_ir_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR and POES AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/12\/101211-12_modis_avhrr_ir_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR and POES AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR and POES AVHRR 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As part of the CIMSS involvement in <strong><a href=\"..\/..\/..\/goes_r\/proving-ground.html\">GOES-R Proving Ground<\/a><\/strong> activities, <strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>MODIS and POES AVHRR satellite images and products are currently being made available in an AWIPS format for interested NWS  forecast offices to add to their local AWIPS workstations <em>(via LDM  subscription)<\/em>.
