An eye became apparent by the end of the animation (the overlapping Mesoscale Sectors ended at 0438 UTC on 22 September, when Sector 1 was re-positioned over the Southwest US).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the period of 30-second imagery, a single GOES-18 Mesoscale Sector provided 1-minute Infrared Window imagery for the remainder of the day on 22 September <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong>, as Polo continued to rapidly intensify to a Category 4 (at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/archive\/2026\/ep17\/ep172026.public_a.006.shtml\">0600 UTC<\/a><\/strong>) and then to a Category 5 hurricane (at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/archive\/2026\/ep17\/ep172026.public_a.007.shtml\">1200 UTC<\/a><\/strong>). It is interesting to note that as Polo was progressing toward its maximum intensity (at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/archive\/2026\/ep17\/ep172026.update.09221858.shtml\">1900 UTC<\/a><\/strong>), an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nwafiles.nwas.org\/file\/nwafiles\/jom\/articles\/2017\/2017-JOM14\/2017-JOM14.pdf\">Enveloped Eyewall Lighting Signature<\/a><\/strong> was evident in the concentration of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/glm.html\">GLM<\/a><\/strong> Flash Points (for example, at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_1445utc_goes18_infrared_glmFlashPoints_EELS_Polo.png\">1445 UTC<\/a><\/strong> or at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_1637utc_g18_ir_glm_eels_Polo.png\">1637 UTC<\/a><\/strong>); however, this eyewall lightning then abruptly ended after about 1900 UTC. (The ~2 hour GOES-18 data outage and subsequent image degradation\/striping was due to a NOAA <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ospo.noaa.gov\/data\/messages\/2026\/09\/MSG_20260922_1635.html\">firewall maintenance issue<\/a><\/strong>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of central pressure &#8212; with a minimum of 892 hPa (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260923_satcon_mslp_Polo.png\">SATCON<\/a><\/strong>) &#8212; Polo became the second-most intense hurricane on record in the East Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video autoplay controls loop muted src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_goes18_infrared_glmFlashPoints_Hurricane_Polo.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>1-minute GOES-18 Infrared Window images with plots of GLM Flash Points, from 0500-2359 UTC on 22 September<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within an hour of Polo reaching Category 5 intensity at 1200 UTC, a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> from Canada&#8217;s RCM-3 satellite (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/sarwinds_tropical.php\">source<\/a><\/strong>) depicted wind speeds as high as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_1241utc_rcm3_sar_Polo_NWquadrant.png\">144.37 knots<\/a><\/strong> in the NW quadrant of the hurricane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_1241utc_rcm3_sar_Polo.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_1241utc_rcm3_sar_Polo.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>RCM-3 SAR wind speed image at 1241 UTC on 22 September [click to enlarge]<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Products from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic.php\">CIMSS Tropical Cyclones<\/a><\/strong> site showed two factors that were favorable for Polo&#8217;s rapid intensification on 22 September: (1) moving through an environment of low to moderate vertical wind shear (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_goes18_infrared_0900utcShear_Polo.gif\">0900 UTC<\/a><\/strong> | <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_goes18_infrared_1800utcShear_Polo.gif\">1800 UTC<\/a><\/strong>), and (2) traversing warm water (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_sst_Polo.gif\">Sea Surface Temperature<\/a><\/strong> | <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/09\/260922_ohc_Polo.gif\">Ocean Heat Content<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overlapping 1-minute Mesoscale Domain Sectors provided 30-second GOES-18 (GOES-West) Infrared Window images of Hurricane Polo (above) as it rapidly intensified from a Category 1 to a high-end Category 3 storm late in the day on 21 September 2026.
