The spatial resolution of the MODIS water vapor image is 1 km, compared to 8 km for the GOES-13 water vapor image <em>(note that the native resolution of the water vapor channel on GOES-13 is actually 4 km, but this image was viewed on the AWIPS &#8220;CONUS&#8221; scale, which downgrades the resolution to 8 km).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>About 2 hours later, an AWIPS image of the <strong><a title=\"POES\/AVHRR in AWIPS: VISIT training lesson\" href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/poes_and_avhrr_satellite_products_in_awips\/\">POES AVHRR<\/a><\/strong> Cloud Top Height product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that the tops of the mountain wave cloud bands at that time were generally in the 3-4 km range, which corresponded well to some of the altitudes of pilot reports of moderate turbulence <em>(8,000-10,000 feet above ground level)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/11\/AVHRR_CLD_HGT_20101117_1737.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"POES AVHRR Cloud Top Height product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/11\/AVHRR_CLD_HGT_20101117_1737.png\" alt=\"POES AVHRR Cloud Top Height product\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">POES AVHRR Cloud Top Height product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As part of the CIMSS involvement in <strong><a href=\"..\/..\/..\/goes_r\/proving-ground.html\">GOES-R Proving Ground<\/a><\/strong> activities, <strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>MODIS and POES AVHRR satellite images and products are currently being made available in an AWIPS format for interested NWS  forecast offices to add to their local AWIPS workstations <em>(via LDM  subscription)<\/em>.
