Tragically, the rapid growth and erratic wildfire behavior resulted in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2026\/08\/07\/wrights-spring-fire-oregon\/\">one firefighter fatality<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rapid wildfire growth was also evident in 1-minute GOES-18 GeoColor RGB images with a overlay of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/ngfs\/\">Next Generation Fire System<\/a><\/strong> (NGFS) Fire Detection polygons <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong>. The Wrights Spring Fire burned very hot, first exhibiting the GOES-18 Band 7 detector saturation temperature of 138 C at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/08\/260807_2043utc_g18_rgb_ngfs_saturation.png\">2043 UTC<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video autoplay controls loop muted src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/08\/260807_g18_geoColorRGB_ngfs_WrightsSpringFire_OR.mov\" playsinline><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>1-minute GOES-18 GeoColor RGB images with an overlay of NGFS Fire Detection polygons, from 1800 UTC on 07 August to 0200 UTC on 08 August<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the subsequent nighttime hours, the bright glow of the large Wrights Spring Fire was apparent in central Klamath County (about 15 miles north-northeast of Klamath Falls International Airport, KLMT) in NOAA-21 VIIRS Day\/Night Band imagery <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/08\/260808_1021utc_noaa21_viirs_dayNightBand_OR.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/08\/260808_1021utc_noaa21_viirs_dayNightBand_OR.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>NOAA-21 (mislabeled by AWIPS as NPP) VIIRS Day\/Night Band image valid at 1021 UTC on 08 August [click to enlarge]<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1-minute Mesoscale Domain Sector GOES-18 (GOES-West) Visible images with an overlay of the Fire Mask derived product (above) showed the rapid growth of the Wrights Springs Fire in southwestern Oregon on 07 August 2026.
