Firefighters working the Knowles and Gore fires in far western Colorado were involved in a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/wildlandfireservice\/burnover-incident-western-colorado-wildfire-results-federal-wildland\">burnover incident<\/a><\/strong>, which tragically resulted in 3 deaths and 2 serious injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resulting wildfire complex burned very hot, first exhibiting the 137.88\u00baC saturation temperature of GOES-18 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\">ABI<\/a><\/strong> Shortwave Infrared (3.9 \u00b5m) detectors at 1917 UTC <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video autoplay controls loop muted src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/06\/260627_1917utc_g18_rgb_ngfs_saturation_anim.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>GOES-18 GeoColor RGB image at 1917 UTC on 27 June, with\/without a probe of NGFS parameters<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rapid growth of the thermal signature of this wind-driven wildfire complex was also very apparent in 1-minute GOES-18 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/QuickGuide_GOESR_DayLandCloudFireRGB_final-1.pdf\">Day Land Cloud Fire RGB<\/a><\/strong> imagery <strong><em>(below<\/em>)<\/strong> &#8212; a surface observation site just northwest of the fire showed that southwest winds were gusting to 50 mph at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/06\/260627_1725utc_goes18_geoColorRGB_ngfsFireDetections_surfaceObservations.png\">1725 UTC<\/a><\/strong>, and gusting to 57 mph at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/06\/260627_2145utc_goes18_geoColorRGB_ngfsFireDetections_surfaceObservations.png\">2145 UTC<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video autoplay controls loop muted src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/06\/260627_goes18_dayFireRGB_UT_CO.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>1-minute GOES-18 Day Land Cloud Fire RGB images with plots of surface observations, from 1600 UTC on 27 June to 0100 UTC on 28 June<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1-minute Mesoscale Domain Sector GOES-18 (GOES-West) GeoColor RGB images with\/without an overlay of Next Generation Fire System (NGFS) Fire Detection polygons (above) highlighted the rapid growth of the Snyder Fire as it merged with other wildfires in far western Colorado during the day on 27 June 2026.
