{"id":7082,"date":"2010-11-02T18:57:30","date_gmt":"2010-11-02T18:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=7082"},"modified":"2011-01-24T19:17:11","modified_gmt":"2011-01-24T19:17:11","slug":"lake-mendota-fog-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/7082","title":{"rendered":"Lake Mendota fog features"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/quad.aos.wisc.edu\/webcam_movies\/2010_11_02_fogcane_northwest_1024x768.mov\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"AO&amp;SS building rooftop camera (facing northwest)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/11\/101102_aoss_rooftop_camera_poster.jpg\" alt=\"AO&amp;SS building rooftop camera (facing northwest)\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">AO&amp;SS building rooftop camera (facing northwest)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nocturnal radiation fog formed over <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/metobs.ssec.wisc.edu\/buoy\/\">Lake Mendota<\/a><\/strong> <em>(the largest of the 4 lakes in the immediate vicinity of Madison, Wisconsin)<\/em> on <a title=\"02 November 2010 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20101102.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>02 November 2010<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; the evolution and motion of this fog was captured by a northwest-facing camera <strong><em>(above; <a href=\"http:\/\/quad.aos.wisc.edu\/webcam_movies\/2010_11_02_fogcane_northwest_640x480.mov\">smaller 640&#215;480 version<\/a>)<\/em><\/strong> mounted on the top of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aos.wisc.edu\/\">Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences<\/a><\/strong> building on the University of Wisconsin &#8211; Madison campus (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=1225+West+Dayton+Street&amp;sll=43.112262,-89.402103&amp;sspn=0.095365,0.246506&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=1225+W+Dayton+St,+Madison,+Dane,+Wisconsin+53715&amp;t=h&amp;ll=43.097223,-89.419098&amp;spn=0.190777,0.362206&amp;z=12\">Google map<\/a><\/strong>). The camera video begins at 09:54 UTC <em>(4:54 am local time)<\/em> and ends at 15:39 UTC <em>(10:39 am local time)<\/em>. During the daylight hours, there even appeared to be evidence of a local-scale cyclonic circulation within the fog feature along the southern shore of Lake Mendota. <em>Thanks to Pete Pokrandt, AOS, for supplying the QuickTime animation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of the 4-km resolution GOES-13 fog\/stratus product at night (followed by 1-km resolution GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images after sunrise) are shown below. In spite of the high amount of noise and &#8220;false fog\/stratus pixels&#8221; <em>(yellow enhancement),<\/em> the GOES-13 fog\/stratus product  did show a relatively persistent fog signal over Lake Mendota through much of the night-time hours &#8212;  and then the fog features could then be seen dissipating on the GOES-13 visible images after sunrise. On both the rooftop camera video and the GOES-13 visible images, the fog features appeared to be drifting to the southwest &#8212; in fact, the surface visibility at the Middleton Municipal Airport <em>(<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.gov\/data\/obhistory\/KC29.html\">KC29<\/a><\/strong>, located just to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/11\/mendota_airports.jpg\">west of Lake Mendota<\/a><\/strong>)<\/em> dropped to 0.15 mile, while the surface visibility at Madison&#8217;s Dane County Regional Airport airport <em>(<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.gov\/data\/obhistory\/KMSN.html\">KMSN<\/a><\/strong>, located just to the east of Lake Mendota)<\/em> only fell to 3.0 miles.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/11\/101102_g13_fog_vis_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-13 fog\/stratus product + GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/11\/101102_g13_fog_vis_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-13 fog\/stratus product + GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 fog\/stratus product + GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An AWIPS image of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/poes_and_avhrr_satellite_products_in_awips\/\">POES AVHRR<\/a><\/strong> 1-km resolution Sea Surface Temperature product <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> indicated that SST values over the central portion of Lake Mendota were as warm as 54.5\u00c2\u00ba F at 23:55 UTC <em>(6:55 PM local time)<\/em> before sunset.
