Of the 20 confirmed tornadoes so far across the NWS Chicago forecast area, initial <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/06\/260615_klot_pns.text\">storm surveys<\/a><\/strong> have found EF3 damage in Streator, Illinois and Kouts, Indiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1-minute GOES-19 Visible and Infrared Window images that included plots of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/glm.html\">GLM<\/a><\/strong> Flash Points <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> highlighted the abundant lightning activity associated with these thunderstorms. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/06\/260611_2058utc_goes19_visible_infrared_metars_IL.png\">Surface observations<\/a><\/strong> also supported the satellite depiction of a relatively cloud-free cold pool (created by outflow from a decaying convective complex across northeastern Illinois earlier in the day) &#8212; and the upscale growth and tornado production of discrete supercell thunderstorms appeared to increase as they moved eastward and interacted with that residual boundary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video autoplay controls loop muted src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/06\/260611_goes19_visible_infrared_glmFlashPoints_IL.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>1-minute GOES-19 Visible and Infrared Window images, with\/without an overlay of 1-minute GLM Flash Points<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plots of rawinsonde data from Lincoln, Illinois (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/06\/260611_kilx_location.png\">location<\/a><\/strong>) at 1800 UTC and 2100 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> displayed a marked increase in the atmosphere&#8217;s instability and shear parameters during that 3-hour period &#8212; and an elevated mixed layer became well-defined.
