AWIPS images of the MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST) product <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed daytime LST values as high as <strong>140\u00c2\u00ba F<\/strong> in southeastern Colorado and <strong>134\u00c2\u00ba F<\/strong> in southwestern Nebraska &#8212; while the surface &#8220;skin temperatures&#8221; were quite warm, the actual air temperatures <em>(measured within shaded instrument shelters located about 5\u00c2\u00a0 feet above the surface)<\/em> were only the in upper 90s to low 100s F.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to note that the LST values were significantly lower across much of southcentral and southeastern Nebraska <em>(in the upper 80s to low 90s F, green to yellow colors),<\/em> even though the air temperatures were similar to those seen in eastern Colorado at that time <em>(in the upper 90s to low 100s F)<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 These lower LST values were due to a much higher density of vegetation in eastern Nebraska, as shown by a comparison with the MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; NDVI values were greater than 0.7 in Nebraska, compared to 0.1 to 0.3 across much of eastern Colorado. In addition, very dry conditions had prevailed across eastern Colorado &#8212; Denver had only received 3.28 inches of precipitation so far in the year <em>(the normal is 10.25 inches for the 01 January\u00c2\u00a0 &#8211; 31 July period)<\/em> &#8212; in contrast with Hastings in eastern Nebraska, which had received 6.77 inches of precipitation so far in the year <em>(the normal precipitation is 3.81 inches for the 01 January &#8211; 31 July period)<\/em>. The combination of drier soils and sparse vegetation\u00c2\u00a0 helped contribute to such high MODIS LST values.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080803_modis_lst_ndvi_vis_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS LST + NDVI + visible image (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080803_modis_lst_ndvi_vis_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS LST + NDVI + visible image (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"MODIS LST + NDVI + visible image (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"452\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>MODIS true color imagery from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=t1&amp;product=true_color&amp;date=2008_08_03_216&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true&amp;sector=USA2&amp;resolution=1000m\" title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> confirmed the presence of a much higher density of vegetation <em>(denoted by darker green colors)<\/em> across eastern Nebraska, compared to that found across eastern Colorado.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080803_modis_truecolor.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/08\/080803_modis_truecolor.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" alt=\"MODIS true color image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"362\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>03 August 2008 marked the 22nd\u00c2\u00a0 consecutive day of daily high temperatures of 90\u00c2\u00ba F or higher at Denver, Colorado (the old record was 18 consecutive days, set back in 1874 and 1901).
