The initial NGFS thermal signature occurred at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/03\/260323_2326utc_goes19_microphysicsRGB_ngfsFireDetections_TX_refinery_fire.png\"><strong>2326 UTC<\/strong><\/a>, and lasted nearly 10 hours until <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/03\/260324_0916utc_g19_rgb_ngfs.png\"><strong>0916 UTC<\/strong><\/a> (the maximum values of probed NGFS parameters occurred at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/03\/260323_2336utc_g19_rgb_ngfs_sample.png\"><strong>2336 UTC<\/strong><\/a>). Surface winds were light southerly in the vicinity of the fire.<\/p>\n<p>True Color RGB images from the <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#playing:true;coordinate:-177256,137866;zoom:1.4;num_frames:60;\"><strong>CSPP GeoSphere<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that the resultant cloud was slowly spreading west-southwestward away from the refinery just before sunset (as a precaution, residents of the western parts of Port Arthur were instructed to shelter in place for about 12 hours).
